How Poland's renewables journey illuminates South Africa's future.
Guests

Matthew Cruise & Mateusz Musiał. Matthew Cruise: a leading South African solar and energy analyst, heading sales for Powern. Mateusz Musiał: Director of International Affairs, GreenCapital Poland.

Recorded outdoors in Stellenbosch, under the oak trees. Two energy operators, one from each end of the bridge, on the same question: what does Poland's fifteen-year renewables build-out actually teach a country in the middle of load-shedding. Matthew Cruise has been one of the most-quoted analysts on South African power for years. Mateusz Musiał trades electricity on the Polish market and has been building solar projects across both countries.

The conversation is more practical than ideological. Cruise explains why South African solar tariff auctions are now clearing at price points that make every new project immediately profitable: a five-times return on capital over the panel's 25-year life, in the cleanest version of the math. Musiał explains the trade he runs in Poland, where the role of the intermediary is to absorb volatility so the buyer can plan around a fixed price, and why that role is exactly what South Africa is missing. They agree, gently and on camera, that South Africa's transmission constraint will be solved the same way Poland's was: by capital following price signal, slowly, then all at once.

A useful episode for anyone trying to underwrite African energy from Europe, or trying to sell European capital into African projects.
